In relation to the media area you have studied, discuss the way that audience consumption has changed over time: Over time, the use and consumption of media has varied and increased in accordance with the different generations. Over the last ten years, we have seen a revolution in media consumption habits, driven mainly by the ubiquity of smart phones and the accessibility of social media and other social platforms. The use of smart phones and technology has reached the point where it is so heavily relied on that it is a necessity required for the daily life of individuals. Nowadays data is relatively cheap and more accessible now than it ever was before, transforming our behaviour in alternating, exciting and confronting ways. With the continuous increase and rapid development of technology, it has reached a point where streaming platforms have started to replace linear TV for people under the age of 40. TV was once the unquestioned champion of media, a medium almost everyone consumed

Media Theories

MEDIA STUDIES: THEORIES Stuart Hall’s Reception Theory: ·         Stuart Hall’s reception theory emphasizes that media texts are encoded and decoded. ·         The producer encodes messages and ideas based on their own ideologies which are then decoded by the audience. ·         However, audiences with different ideologies will interpret media differently, and perhaps in a way that producers did not intend for. Dominant/Preferred Reading: ·         This is how the producer wants the audience to view and interpret the media text. ·         Audience members will take this position if the messages are clear and if the audience member is of the same age and culture. ·         This was of interpretation is viewed if it has an easy to follow narrative and if it deals with themes relative to the audience. ·         E.g., The audience has decoded the Joker exactly as the producers intended – as the villain. Oppositional Reading: ·         This is when the audience rej

Representation Essay (Practise): When They See Us

Explain how meaning is created in the extract, using the four technical areas:   In the extract from the Netflix TV drama  'When They See Us' (2019), there is a representation of ethnicity and age, provided by the four technical elements - camera, sound, editing and mise-en-scene. In addition to this, typical stereotypes are used to influence the sequence of events that occur throughout the scene. The two-shot of the mother and son in front of a mirror is symbolic of the character reflection from both the mum and son. Despite the situation and the lack of dialogue, it still manages to convey the relationship and warmth between the two. The voiceover aligns with the character interactions and their actions. "You watch them grow up and you start to think you did a good job...and then one night you look away" shows the inner reflection from the mother on who she raised her son to be. She looks away and leaves the scene at the same time the audio says this, and it is then

Essay: Audiences

"How does your own experience of media consumption illustrate wider patterns of audience behaviour?" Over the last ten years, we have seen a revolution in our media consumption habits , driven by the ubiquity of smartphones, the rise of social media and the rollout of broadband. Younger audiences are more inclined to use smartphones as opposed to linear television. The introduction of Netflix and YouTube  has caused the rapid decline in linear television in people under the age of 40. This acceleration is mainly due to people having more access to internet with 35% of the world's population owning or having access to a phone. Older generations have a smaller change in the patterns that make up today's media consumption. Media conglomerates such as Disney and Netflix have encouraged the use of SVODs - Streaming video on Demand - but has ultimately resulted in a decline in theatrical attendance as more streaming services are available for public use.  Large numbers of s

Audience Trends in NZ

Audience Trends in New Zealand: Over the last 10 years we have seen a revolution in our media consumption habits, driven by the ubiquity of smartphones, the rise of social media and the rollout of broadband. Despite the pleasure we take in complaining about their prices (which are still high enough to exclude some), this country has now had relatively cheap and fast and plentiful data, at home and away from it, for years. And it has transformed our behaviour in alternately exciting and confronting ways. Netflix and YouTube have replaced linear TV for under 40s This is the megatrend which remains in full flow: the decline in linear television viewing for those under 40. TV was once the unquestioned champion of media, a medium almost everyone consumed which unified the nation and gave us a shared culture and perspective.  Their use of linear television has almost halved in just five years, a staggeringly fast drop. What they do instead is streaming. As the chart shows, online video – p

Representation Essay: Hotel Babylon

Explain how meaning is created using the four technical elements in the following clip: In the clip extracted from the British drama TV series Hotel Babylon, meaning is created through the representation of ethnic diversity and the contrast in gender. The scene shown illustrates the distinct lack of power the immigrants have compared to the immigration officers who do not hesitate to abuse the authority they have over others simply because they are privileged white Englishmen. Through Stuart Hall's reception theory the audience is provided with the dominant reading that white males are ruthless and hostile towards others and women are more caring and tenderhearted in the representation of gender. The camera shots used link closely to the lives of the people in the shot. For example, when the officers appear in the building, wide and mid shots are used to create this sense of dominance that exudes from them. Mise-en-scene and the placement of people help determine this as well as th

Representation Notes: Hotel Babylon

Hotel Babylon: Representation of ethnicity and their comparison British white people compared to ethnic minority Illegal immigrants are shown as cooks and cleaners, despite them having qualified professions. For example, the man helping the woman with diabetes was a doctor Immigration officers appear to be white privileged people who freely demonstrate their positions of power. Immigrants' lives (POV) -Qualified people doin low maintenance jobs -Desperate people -Empathise with immigrants -Officers seem to be abusing their authority Gender Angelic white woman, lighting, calm, puts out the call to help others Men seem inhumane, ruthless Women are the concerned and caring people Countertype of illegal immigrants being highly qualified

Impact of Technology

  Technology: Technology by Brianna Hodder

Technology Notes

Photochemical film has been the exclusive format used to capture, develop, project and store moving images for over 100 years. Digital technology is evolving to a point that may very well replace film as the primary means of creating and sharing motion pictures Is it the end of film? Cinematography is a mixture of art and technology With digital cameras you are able to see exactly what you are filming as opposed to film cameras where it had to be processed and developed before seeing what was filmed the prior day This gives more scope and opportunity to be creative (seeing what was filmed and able to make quick changes) Editing on film is just the technology; the art form is the manipulation of images to tell a story As computers and more technology was introduced, people were wary about using it since they didn't have much knowledge about it. Whereas working with tangible film left no room for accidental deletion or work removed, digital film made mistakes much more easily made. I
