Representation Notes: Hotel Babylon

Hotel Babylon: Representation of ethnicity and their comparison British white people compared to ethnic minority Illegal immigrants are shown as cooks and cleaners, despite them having qualified professions. For example, the man helping the woman with diabetes was a doctor Immigration officers appear to be white privileged people who freely demonstrate their positions of power. Immigrants' lives (POV) -Qualified people doin low maintenance jobs -Desperate people -Empathise with immigrants -Officers seem to be abusing their authority Gender Angelic white woman, lighting, calm, puts out the call to help others Men seem inhumane, ruthless Women are the concerned and caring people Countertype of illegal immigrants being highly qualified

Impact of Technology

  Technology: Technology by Brianna Hodder

Technology Notes

Photochemical film has been the exclusive format used to capture, develop, project and store moving images for over 100 years. Digital technology is evolving to a point that may very well replace film as the primary means of creating and sharing motion pictures Is it the end of film? Cinematography is a mixture of art and technology With digital cameras you are able to see exactly what you are filming as opposed to film cameras where it had to be processed and developed before seeing what was filmed the prior day This gives more scope and opportunity to be creative (seeing what was filmed and able to make quick changes) Editing on film is just the technology; the art form is the manipulation of images to tell a story As computers and more technology was introduced, people were wary about using it since they didn't have much knowledge about it. Whereas working with tangible film left no room for accidental deletion or work removed, digital film made mistakes much more easily made. I...

Teen Drama: Riverdale Essay

Comment on how the 4 technical areas are used to create meaning.  Write down what you think the 'big ideas' are in terms of who is being represented & how. T hink about the idea of 'stereotypes' and how those traditional stereotypes are either challenged or conformed to. In this teen drama, Riverdale, meaning is created through the combination of the four technical elements - camera, editing, sound and mise-en-scene. The representation of class and status, gender and age are evidently shown throughout the scene in the characters and their interactions with one another. Though there is not necessarily a set establishing shot, the camera cuts to different cliques of students within the school which gives the audience an idea of the setting of the location, being Riverdale High School, and the age group that is represented in this scene. The clothing/costumes, which are a part of mise-en-scene, show that the student body as a whole is somewhat within the wealthy part o...

Camera: Shot reverse shot (we see the dialogue and their reactions/facial expressions) Close ups -shows facial expressions Handheld , POV  Camera angles are important in creating meaning Tension shown between Cheryl and Betty (seen through body language, glances, rolling eyes) When Cheryl is coming closer and Archie notices, the camera shots show his facial expressions which indicate he doesn't want to be near her, further emphasized when he leaves just as she arrives. Mise-en-scene: In mufti clothes Archie is wearing a football jacket (jock) Cheryl's skirt matches her hair Pink makes Betty look innocent Girl with darker f...

Synergy and Cross-Media Convergence

"Synergy and Cross-Media-Convergence are vital processes in the successful marketing of media products to audiences." To what extent do you agree with this statement in relation to your chosen media area? Several media institutions use synergy and cross-media convergence to market their films successfully and introduce them into different markets. The Big Five media conglomerates - Walt Disney Studios, Universal, Warner Bros., Sony/Columbia and 20th Century Fox - have the advantage of owning different studios in both horizontal and vertical integration that allows them to effectively engage audiences and promote their films with the use of cross-media convergence and synergy. Disney has the advantage of owning a large number of acquisitions that they now have the highest percentage of studio market share. In 2018, Disney held the top three spots for films with the highest grossing films domestically, with Black Panther  coming in first at $700 million. In addition to this, on...

Representation Essay: Homeland

Watch this clip through and write down who/ what groups out of the 4 core areas of society are being represented and in what way. In this espionage thriller drama, 'Homeland', we see the representation of gender and ethnicity where stereotypes are portrayed in a way that is fitting into the ideology of the producers. The likelihood of this series being American made provides information that the producers can project their own ideologies and representations that align with what they see as fitting for a specific worldview. Stuart Hall's reception theory can be incorporated to fit the dominant reading, as viewers are interpreting the media text as what the producers are wanting them to interpret and make the ideologies of the two - producers and consumers - align and combine into very similar beliefs. There is a stark contrast between the location of the male and female characters in power in this scene. The woman is in Baghdad, a Middle-Eastern country, as revealed by the t...

Representation Essay: End of Audience Theory - Shirky

"Analyse how media institutions are using different platforms to engage with their audiences." Media institutions use many different platforms to engage with their audiences. Media conglomerates such as the Big Five - Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros Studios, Universal studios, Sony/Columbia Pictures, and 20th Century Fox - have the advantage of owning subsidiaries and film divisions to enable both horizontal and vertical integration to create platforms that effectively engage audiences on a global scale. Throughout the global pandemic of 2019 to the present day, COVID-19 has had a large effect on the media industry. The media industry is going above and beyond to maintain its main role to inform, entertain and connect society by finding new ways to make an impact. Industry effects are recognized, but recent data shows that there is still a gap in consumer confidence in the media. The media industry itself - from content creators to distributors - have been severely impacted....

Representation Essay: Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad Essay: Crime Drama "Explain how the meaning is created using the four technical areas, in the following clip." The combination of the four technical elements of representation - camera, editing, sound and mise-en-scene - has been incorporated carefully to result in a cinematic framework that provides and creates meaning to the scene illustrated in the video provided. Walter White, a chemistry teacher who has incurable cancer, has started a meth-making business to repay his medical debts. During the scene shown we see him trying to teach an inexperienced meth cook how to properly purchase supplies, as he was buying his supplies from the same store, which would undoubtedly be suspicious in the eyes of other customers.  The use of camera work and mise-en-scene shows the difference between the two characters first shown in the beginning of the video. This is likely to have been done in a way to illustrate the contrast of age couple with professionality. White, is cle...
